Our Fate

The link to the picture and the article is here at Science Daily.

Essentially--we're all doomed. 550 light years from here a star is dying. As it dies it grows--gasping for air, as it were. The picture is of that billowing sun.

Our sun will also gasp and billow and expand as it dies.

In another 5 billion years or so.

Great picture, eh?!

  1. Eh? I was quite sure that we had a nice 6-8 billion years. Meh. I'll be dead by then, and presumably we'll have moved on to some other star. Even without fancy dandy FTL systems, we could just build a huge-*** ship and settle down for the long-haul to the nearest habitable planet.

  2. You're right. I got tied up in the distance to sun in the picture. The established number is currently 5 billion years.

I just read an article about space travel and the size of a population that would be needed and the type of government that would be needed to make a good go of it.

Though, I keep thinking that waking up from the sleep during the flight to a computer named HAL would be my recurring nightmare.

"I'm sorry Eric, I'm afraid I can't let you do that."

  3. Im sure in five billion years our lawn mowers will have the ability to fly to another life sustaining planet
